Root Canal Treatment
When decay or injury reaches the soft pulp inside a tooth, it can become inflamed or infected. Root canal treatment cleans the inside of the tooth, relieves pain and lets you keep your natural tooth.

Diagnose
Examination and X-rays confirm whether the pulp is affected and plan the treatment.

With local anaesthetic, the infected pulp is removed and the canals are cleaned and shaped.

The canals are filled and sealed to prevent reinfection.

The tooth is restored — often with a crown — so it can chew safely again.

Is root canal treatment painful?
The treatment is done under local anaesthetic and is usually no more uncomfortable than a filling. It is the infection that causes pain — the treatment relieves it.
How many visits does it take?
Often one or two visits, depending on the tooth and how much infection is present. We’ll explain the plan before we start.
Do children have root canal treatment?
For baby teeth, a simpler pulp treatment (pulpotomy or pulpectomy) is often used to keep the tooth until it falls out naturally.
