Children’s dentistry
Cleft Lip and Palate
Children born with a cleft lip and/or palate need dental care from infancy into adulthood. As part of the wider care team, we focus on healthy teeth and gums, guidance for parents and coordinated treatment as your child grows.
What we look out for
- Teeth that are missing, extra or out of position near the cleft
- Teeth that are harder to clean around the cleft area
- A higher risk of decay and gum inflammation
- Speech, feeding or bite concerns that need a team approach
How we help
- 1
Early guidance
Advice for parents on feeding and cleaning the mouth from the first months.
- 2
Prevention
Regular check-ups, fluoride and cleaning support around the cleft area.
- 3

Fillings and other care for affected teeth, planned with your child’s growth in mind.
- 4
Team coordination
Working alongside the surgical, orthodontic and speech team at each stage.
This is general information. Your treatment is planned after an examination, and we explain the options and costs before we begin.
When should a child with a cleft first see a dentist?
As early as possible — ideally before the first teeth appear — so parents get guidance on cleaning and feeding, and prevention starts early.
Do you perform cleft surgery?
Cleft surgery is done by specialist surgical teams. Our role is the child’s dental health and coordinating dental care with their cleft team.
Will my child need braces?
Many children with a cleft benefit from orthodontic treatment at some stage. We monitor tooth development and refer at the right time.
